A spike in Pediatric Food Allergies in the US

The folks at Good Health always try to develop better-for-you snacks. However, sometimes, no matter how healthy the ingredients are, there are still barriers that prevent people from enjoying certain foods- especially allergies. One of our accountants came across this article, “Pediatric Food Allergies on the Rise in US” from Aol Health. Justine van der Leun, the author, cites the Pediatrics journal in its findings that pediatric allergies increased 18% in just a 10 year period (‘97-’07). Van Der Leun then goes on to mention and explain various theories explaining the significant spike in cases. I found these theories to be quite interesting and decided to share them.

ONE.
Parents are getting better at detecting changes and reactions in their children and thus report more incidents of allergic reactions.

TWO.
Children often go the first couple of years of their lives without being exposed common allergens such as nuts and shellfish; thus, the sudden exposure to such foods could explain the body’s abnormal reaction.

THREE.
The last theory suggests that perhaps it is the Western diet that is a leading factor in the increase of pediatric allergies. Research has shown junk food and meat to make children more prone to allergies.

We at Good Health understand the importance of connecting to our audience personally and making ourselves accessible to you all in as many ways as possible. To take things a bit further, we have decided to unveil the "voice" behind most of our social media efforts, hence the title of this post.

My name is Archele and I'm a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. I have a degree in Advertising from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and I am the Social Media Coordinator for Good Health Natural Products. That means I am here to engage with you and to share all that I am learning about this company and its three divisions, which all produce natural products.

I am the primary host of Good Health's three Twitter sites and Facebook fan pages: Good Health Natural Foods, South of France Body Care and South of France Spa Naturals. On those pages, as well as here on the blog, you will find fun facts, discussion questions, polls and the latest deals within the company. I hope that you will join me on my personal page as well!

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are those organisms that have had very specific alterations made to their DNA through genetic engineering techniques. Adding these treated materials to an ingredient list leads to food that has been, intentionally or not, genetically modified. Not only do these organisms directly affect the food to which they are added, but critics also express grave concern about their ecological effects.

The issue of genetically modified organisms is becoming increasingly present in the news and media as seen very recently in the US Supreme Court case, Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms, surrounding the planting and selling of alfalfa seeds which have been altered to resist pesticides.

Read. Ask. Learn. Find out about the content of the products that are put on the shelves of stores, waiting to be bought and used/eaten in your homes with the people you care for most.

The New York Times mentions Humbles!

The "Dining & Wine" section of the June15, 2010 edition of the respected New York Times discussed the trend of American snacking towards hummus in the article, "Hummus Catches On in America (as Long as It’s Flavored)," by John T.Edge.

The article discussed the boom in the hummus industry over the past few years and went on to name the varieties in which the healthy, high-protein dish is now being prepared and sold. Good Health's Humbles chips, which are available in four flavors, were mentioned alongside other hummus-made products, including flavored hummus spreads, dessert hummus and a Mediterranean hummus dish.
